02. A bridge is a web of connections

The Rio-Niterói Bridge has become part of the landscape of Guanabara Bay. By shortening the crossing distance between the two cities, it forever changed Brazil’s horizon.

With superlative dimensions, it placed Brazilian engineering on the map of scientific advancement and remains, to this day, the bridge with the longest straight continuous beam span in the world.

But how many lives have been transformed since the long-held dream of connecting the two territories came off the drawing board? Not even the most precise calculations could measure the social, political, and economic impact of this engineering masterpiece.

This is why the exhibition Rio-Niterói Bridge: A Bridge Between Stories turns to words, images, documents, and curiosities to preserve the history of this cultural landmark. It recalls what Guanabara Bay once was, who the original peoples were, and how the country has changed since the earliest plans to unite the two cities.

We invite you to cross the more than 13 kilometers of this route, discovering the construction methods, maintenance techniques, and personal stories of those whose lives have been — or still are — intertwined with the history of the Bridge. All gathered here with the collaboration of its managers, who are largely responsible for preserving the integrity of our protagonist for future generations.
