At the height of its construction, around ten thousand people were working on the Rio-Niterói Bridge, including two hundred engineers. Building such a grand structure was undoubtedly a major challenge and brought with it equally significant difficulties. The lack of adequate safety equipment at the time, for example, contributed to some accidents, which became more frequent due to the pressure to meet deadlines.
On March 24, 1970, a significant incident occurred during a load test involving the suspension of massive reinforced concrete columns used to support the bridge. The platform on which the workers stood collapsed and, although it was a tragic event, it’s important to remember that these incidents led to actions aimed at improving safety in the following stages.
Today, all workers on the Rio-Niterói Bridge strictly follow the necessary safety protocols, and this sad chapter in its history has been left behind.
